Why Am I Peeing Every 5 Minutes? (Pregnancy Edition)

pregnant woman needs to pee often

If you’re pregnant and feel like you’ve basically moved into your bathroom, you’re in very good company.

As a pelvic floor physio at PUSH, this is one of the most common things I hear. And yes, while totally normal, there are things you can do to help manage it.

Why am I going so often?

There are a few reasons why your frequency has increased:

  1. Your hormones are changing how your body manages fluids

  2. Your growing uterus is putting a lot of pressure on your bladder

  3. Your pelvic floor muscles are adapting to support your growing baby

Plus, your bladder and brain are constantly communicating. During pregnancy, that communication becomes more sensitive.

Habits like going “just in case” before leaving the house, running to the bathroom at the first hint of an urge or hovering, or rushing when you do go, can actually train your bladder to signal urgency a lot earlier.

What can you do about it?

The good news is that small shifts can make a noticeable difference:

  1. Pause before rushing off
If the urge is mild, give it a moment. You don’t always have to act immediately.

  2. Sit, don’t hover
Fully sitting helps your pelvic floor relax so your bladder can empty more completely.

  3. Relax, don’t push
Pushing can actually confuse your bladder and pelvic floor coordination.

  4. Keep fluids consistent
Cutting fluids too much can backfire and irritate your bladder more.

Keep in mind, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach and everyone is different.

When should you get support?

If you feel like your bladder is running the show, planning your day around bathroom access, constantly thinking about the next trip, it’s worth checking in.

Pelvic physiotherapy (yes, even virtually) can help with:

  • Understanding your specific patterns

  • Guiding you with personalized strategies

  • Feeling more confident and in control day-to-day

Frequent urination in pregnancy is common, but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

With the right guidance, you can absolutely make it more manageable… and maybe even go a full movie without scouting the nearest exit!
